Electric motors operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday, a well-known 19th-century physicist. Electromagnetic induction causes different forms of magnetic and electric fields to exchange. When a changing magnetic field flows through the coil, a force is generated that forces the charges in the coil to move, creating an electric current (dynamo). When the coil (electric motor) is connected to an electrical voltage, the electric current between the coils creates a magnetic field that rotates the rotor.

There are many different classifications of electric motors. A basic classification could be thought of as the division of electric motors by phase. In practice, we most often encounter single-phase and three-phase electric motors. Three-phase electric motors are then divided into synchronous and asynchronous motors. Synchronous motors create a magnetic field that rotates at a synchronous frequency. The rotor speed of asynchronous electric motors differs from the speed of their magnetic field, meaning they rotate asynchronously.
